Many years ago when David and I were still dating we enjoyed a wonderful Christmas time in Jamaica. We relaxed for 7 whole days with jerk chicken, home made beef patties, crashing waves on the beach, the traditional Jamaican Sorrel, and of course Jamaican Eggnog! We enjoyed it so much that even though David had never really drank eggnog before, he wanted to make it a part of our holiday tradition. Today, I’m sharing our own Caribbean eggnog recipe.
Jamaican Eggnog versus American Eggnog
One of the main differences I noticed when comparing a Jamaican Eggnog to an American eggnog is that it’s got more of a kick plus a little bit of a citrus burst of flavor!
What is the best alcohol to make Jamaican eggnog with?
The best alcohol to make eggnog with is typically rum, bourbon, or cognac. For this recipe you’ll need a good rum and bourbon. Also, to make a good Caribbean eggnog recipe you don’t necessarily have to go premium. Any of the affordable alcohols mentioned above will get the job done with the taste still on point. It’s really the other added ingredients that give this eggnog recipe it’s bang!
How is Jamaican Eggnog Traditionally Served?
You can serve eggnog warmed, but for this Jamaican Eggnog recipe you’ll need to plan to chill it in advance of serving. It’s smooth, chilly, creamy, and spicy flavor is going to have you wanting even more!
Ingredients
YIELD = 6-8 Servings
7 Egg Yolks
1½ cup Heavy Cream
½ cup Whole Milk
½ cup sweetened condensed milk
¼ cup Jamaican Rum (White or Dark)
¼ cup Bourbon
½ Dark Brown Sugar
½ tsp Vanilla
¼ tsp Nutmeg
¼ tsp Cinnamon
Zest of ½ lime
Optional
Whipped Topping
Cinnamon Sticks for garnish
Directions
First, SEPARATE the eggs and set the yolks aside. In a large mixing bowl, WHISK the egg yolks and brown sugar together until slightly thick. Next, over MEDIUM HEAT in a large saucepan ADD your whole milk, heavy cream, and nutmeg. BRING TO WARM, but do not boil.
Carefully POUR eggs into warmed milk mixture in the saucepan. Mix then add to mixing bowl and add in condensed milk. Mix on medium.
Finally, DRIZZLE the rum, bourbon, and add in vanilla, spices, and lime zest. MIX on medium until smooth, about 1-2 minutes. POUR the eggnog into a serving pitcher and CHILL until COLD.
ADD whipped topping when serving and a cinnamon stick for garnishing.
