This Keto Shepherds Pie is s a comforting low-carb dish loaded with lamb, vegetables, and cheese with a fluffy cauliflower mash top replacing potato.
Shepherds Pie has been around since 1854, and in Britain, it traditionally contained lamb or mutton.
The Cottage Pie is based on beef and was introduced to the poorer communities in 1791, along with those high-carb potatoes. This keto shepherd’s pie makes eight servings.
Keto Shepherds Pie Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons of Olive Oil
- 1 medium Onion, diced
- 2 cloves of Garlic, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon of thyme, fresh
- 1 teaspoon of Salt
- 2 pounds of Ground Lamb
- 3 large Roma Tomatoes, diced
- 8 fluid ounces (1 cup) of Lamb Stock (or beef or chicken)
- 7 ounces of Cup Mushrooms, halved and sliced
- 1 medium zucchini, diced
- Mash topping ingredients:
- 28 ounces (1 head) of Cauliflower, cut into florets
- 3 ounces of Butter
- 3.5 ounces (1 cup) of Cheddar Cheese, shredded
- 2 Egg Yolks
- 1 teaspoon of Salt
- ½ teaspoon Pepper
- Cheese topping:
- 2.5 ounces (2/3 cup) of Cheddar Cheese, shredded
How To Make Keto Shepherds Pie
- Place a large saucepan over medium-high heat.
- Add the oil, onion, garlic, thyme, and salt and saute until the onion is beginning to turn translucent.
- Break up the ground lamb and add to the saucepan. Brown the mince while breaking it into smaller pieces with a wooden spoon.
- When the mince is browned, add the diced tomatoes and stock. Simmer for 20 minutes.
- Add the mushrooms and simmer for another 15 minutes.
- Add the zucchini and simmer for 5 minutes before turning off the heat.
- Pour the mixture into your casserole dish and set aside to cool slightly.
- Preheat oven to 190C/375F.
How to Make Keto Cottage Pie Mash Topping
- Boil a saucepan ⅔ filled with water.
- Add the cauliflower and cook for 10 minutes or until the cauliflower is tender.
- Drain the cauliflower well, then return to the saucepan.
- Add the butter. Blend the cauliflower into a puree using a stick blender
- Add the cheese and blend until melted and mixed through.
- Add the egg yolks, salt, and pepper, and blend well.
- Spoon the mash on top of the Lamb Pie mixture and spread evenly.
Cheese Topping
- Top the Cauliflower mash with cheddar cheese.
- Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes, until the cheese is browned.
- Remove from the oven, serve, and enjoy.

Long time to cook, but it worth it. Light and delicious. Cauliflower mash is perfect. Used Italian herbs, instead of thyme.Reply
So yummy! I used 2 cauliflower heads for the topping as 1 barely covered the meat.Reply
Made this tonight. It was very good! The kids even ate it. Daughter was surprised that the topping was mashed cauliflower. Will definitely make again. The filling was runny though, may try adding some Xanthum Gum to thicken the broth a bit. Thanks for this recipe!
